There are a number of products on the market that claim to effectively repel snakes from a treated area.  I will warn you that not all of them work though, and even the ones that do cannot be 100% trusted to work for an extended period of time.

The object of snake repellents is to over stimulate the senses of snakes with smells by applying the repellent to the areas snakes are commonly found.  These smells are offensive to the snakes and force them away.  The ingredients irritate and confuse the snake’s chemo-sensory system which impairs the snake’s ability to gather information about its surroundings, forcing it to look elsewhere to live.

Ingredients to Stay Away From:

Historically, most snake repellent’s main ingredient for keeping snakes away was naphthalene.  This chemical has been found to be toxic and harmful to humans and animals.  Not something you really want around your home, family, and pets.  Regardless of which repellent you choose it is strongly advised that you read the label and make sure the snake repellent does not have naphthalene of any type.  Any snake repellent we recommend on this site will not contain any known toxic chemicals and are products we have used around our own families and pets.

As I am sure you know, most snakes are harmless and in fact are quite helpful to the environment.  If you are the type of person who has an inherent fear of snakes, then the best long term solution is learn to handle the sight of a snake calmly.  Most fear of snakes is far from rational, although a small amount of snake fear is good.  For instance, the first reaction when seeing a snake should be to get a safe distance from it.  Then you can safely identify it and determine your next course of action.  Even a venomous snake does not warrant irrational behavior.  As long as you know where it is and you are a safe distance from it, even a venomous snake is harmless.

It is unfortunate that snakes have gained since a bad rap.  Take a snake to a first grade class and nearly every child, including girls will want to hold it.  Take that same snake to a middle school class and  the girls, as well as some boys will show an inherent fear of it.  Go to a high school class with the snake and even more fear is usually present.  That shows that the fear of snakes is a learned response and has been taught as the way it should be.
